________________________________________
SR-71 Titanium sees the light of day for the first time after more than 40 years after its tremendous impact straight into the Earth.
25 Oct 1967, #61-7965 was the 10th Blackbird lost. Estimated speed at impact in excess of 1200 miles per hour sending debris through the bottom of a 40 foot crater. Lockheed Skunk Works build number 2016 was on a training mission and returning home to Beale AFB when it’s Navigation System failed in total darkness. "ASPEN 28's" pilot, Capt. Roy StMartin and RSO Capt. John Carnochan narrowly and heroically escaped with their lives.
This pilot’s canopy ejected with the aircrew thus survived the devastating impact and remains one of the very few whole pieces of 965 in existence.
As the story goes,
During a high speed training mission on a very dark night. 25 Oct 1967. Pilot Maj Roy St Martin and RSO Capt John Carnochan were finishing up maneuvers as call sign “ASPEN 28”. During the Mach 2.8 dash back to their home base in Northern California. The navigation system failed without warning. This caused the autopilot to bring the aircraft into a steep bank while the instruments indicated the aircraft was still in level flight.
It was so dark outside that the crew had no visible horizon. As the aircraft fell from 60,000 feet its speed increased. Miles passed in seconds, the SR-71 inverted and recovery became impossible. At 40,000 feet the aircraft was in a terminal dive.
The bailout order was given and the RSO ejected at a speed of Mach 1.4, below 30,000 feet. His seat was about 6 miles from the crash site. The pilot soon followed as the aircrafts speed increased and less than one mile before sure death, as his canopy deployed just prior to terrain altitude above 5,000 ft. His ejection sequence was still in progress as the jet shot into the earth like a hypervelocity meteor creating a bright white blinding titanium flash explosion. His seat landed 110 yards from the crater. Before he ejected he heard a warning buzzer in the cockpit that indicated the plane was below 10,000 feet with the landing gear retracted.
The huge impact crater left no recognizable traces of the aircraft. It’s been reported that nothing of SR-71A #61-7965 was found bigger than a grapefruit and what didn’t disintegrate, penetrated deep into the earth.------------ Except her Canopy’s.
